ALF #33
Marvel Comics (September 1990)
WRITER: Michael Gallagher PENCILER: Dave Manak (story 1); Rusty Haller (story 2, according to comics.org–only the name Haller is listed) INKER: Marie Severin COLORIST: George Roussos LETTERER: Rick Parker EDITOR: Fabian Nicieza
This issue was slightly different as there are only two stories this round, which is a step in the right direction, but I don’t know if it kept. This is the lastest issue I own, with issue 30 still gone missing.
“Man Over Game Board” shows us what role-playing games are like on Melmac. (Already I have Siskoid’s attention.) ALF plays the “Luncheon Master” with Lynn as the prisoner and the others as mythical Melmacians trying to both rescue her and make a sandwich. It’s a silly D&D parody and it’s kind of fun.
“Home Video-Uh-Oh” shows ALF sending in a video of himself to an “America’s Funnest Home Video” style show. Now the Tanners has to put together an ALF costume to protect his secret. Part of me wishes this had been an episode of the show, if only to see the costume and the puppet together in the same shot. Otherwise, a forgettable story.
That’s really how the entire series (or the six issues I owned) went, isn’t it? Not bad, but ultimately forgettable. Gallagher’s done better stuff (for example I will praise his work on Mighty Mouse when I get to those issues) but maybe it’s just the fact that I outgrew ALF or something. I haven’t been drawn to watching the sitcom in years, and it is up on Hulu. The animated series I still want to see more of, but that’s the sci-fi toonhead in me. These comics aren’t bad enough to add to the purge pile yet, but not good enough that I would recommend them to any but the biggest of ALF fans. But until I find issue #30, that does it for ALF comics. The next retro comic will be something else.

I’m just still absorbing the face that you’ve multi-posted about Alf.
Mighty Mouse, now THAT I can get behind. I have a few of the Star issues I think.

“Yesterday’s Comic” is like “Today’s Comic” except that I’m reviewing comics I already own to fill in gaps when I don’t have a new comic to review. (Also I’m deciding which ones to keep and which ones to get rid of, sort of like The Clutter Reports.) It just happened I had three spaces and three issues from the same series to go.
Just wait until I reach the DC & Marvel universes, Transformers, Robotech, Star Trek, old Sonics…
