Some years ago an idiot soldier takes a Rodan egg back to the US base as a souvenir. Rather than put it back and keep Rodan from threatening the base (you know, the smart thing) they lock it away underground for study. The scientist becomes so obsessed with it that he neglects his son, who also deals with school bullies–until the boy suggests taking the egg rather than let the military destroy it. Someone is about lose everything in order to learn what was the most precious.
What they got right: I thought this was going to turn into a violent revenge story, and thankfully it took a surprising turn that kind of had you rooting for the kid even though he probably made the dumbest move in history. I didn’t see it coming, but I liked where it headed. Both covers are well done, although Art Adams’ covers are going to be my goal in the name of cover connectivity. (No, they don’t join together, although that would have been cool.) Finally it’s nice to see Rodan, my favorite Godzilla ally from the “good ol’ days”, get a solo story, which I don’t think has happened since the original Rodan movie.
What they got wrong: I can’t call the art bad, because it did it’s job well. However, it didn’t exactly “wow” me and if I really have to put something here I might as well shoehorn in that.
Recommendation: IDW is wrong to make this a mini-series. This would make a great second title. An anthology allows monsters besides Godzilla (who has no appearance in this issue, even by name) to get a moment in the spotlight is a great idea and I really hope this is a trial run for a full series.

How does Siskoid post those double page splashes? Editing or a really big scanner?

OK, I wrote that a day or two before. I didn’t even think about the caption gag.
