Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Color Classics #3
IDW Publishing (July 2012)
(originally published in 1985)
WRITERS/ARTISTS: Kevin Eastman & Peter Laird IDW COLORS: Tom Smith IDW EDITOR: Tom Waltz
After the Turtles lead April out of the sewers, they return home finding only damaged mousers and no Splinter. Seeking April’s help, the group finds themselves on the run when her van is mistaken for one used by bank robbers. In an epilogue, we learn that Splinter did escape a mouser attack to be found by agents of TCRI…who are inhuman aliens in robot bodies!
What they got right: Personally, I find the censored cursing funny (“holy hippo spit” and “snot”). The art is good and while the story isn’t as good as the previous issues it wasn’t bad.
What they got wrong: Although I’m not sure the chase bit benefited the continuing storyline. It seemed added to let the readers know that they were keeping their existence a secret. Also, there are times that the word balloon positioning doesn’t flow right. Under the circumstances it’s understandable, but it still needs to be pointed out for a proper critique.
Recommendation: You begin to see why the series became popular. Even if you have the original black and whites, it’s still worth looking at. The colors do add to the artwork, and that’s not always true for colorized b&w comics.
