The Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom #1
IDW Publishing (August, 2012)
WRITER: Mark Waid ARTIST: Chris Samnee COLORIST: Jordie Bellaire LETTERER: Shawn Lee EDITOR: Scott Dunbier
Peevy’s teenage niece, Sally, is a would-be pilot an ace plane mechanic who also has a huge crush on Cliff. This plus an incident with the inspector leads to meetings with the Rocketeer. Meanwhile, bad guys arrive in LA, and one of them may have his own history with the Rocketeer.
What they got right: As a set-up issue, it does well. We still get a spectacular Rocketeer rescue, get introduced to the new character, and an introduction to the bad guys. The character Sally could be interesting in this arc and I applaud at least an attempt to broaden the cast, even if it ends up being for one arc.
What they got wrong: Although I kind of hope it’s only this arc. Giving Betty the rival for a change instead of Cliff sounds fun (provided Sally’s at least legal) but–and granted this is only the first issue–I’ll have to be convinced that she has any staying power past this arc.
Recommendation: I like how it’s starting so I’d at least say give it a look. Since it’s a set-up comic I won’t know for sure how good the story is until we get a little further in.
Some good scenes but no stand out Best Scene moments.
