Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were a reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

My next commentary article has to wait for some updated information, possibly today. In the meantime, let’s read something?

Last time we saw Quaid on Mars. Or did we? Did he fall to his death or will his clock alarm save him? Find out…probably by watching the movie.

Chapter 2: Lori

And here we meet the other woman in the real world; Quaid’s wife, Lori. And her breasts. Seriously, is this Quaid’s obsession or Piers’? I’m also starting to wonder why the book ignores his first name in the narration but he did get called “Quaid” more often than “Doug/Douglas” in the movie as I recall. But yes, outside of being blonde, our first introduction to Lori is that her boobs are popping out of her see-through nightie. Granted, her job IS to distract Quaid from memories of Mars so I guess that works.

What follows is Quaid trying to make the dream work in real-world terms mixed with a Harlequin romance novel for men. I guess it goes by faster in the movie, where you see or see hints of Lori seducing Quaid without needed the play-by-play. It felt less steamy in the movie and when your hot girl is being played by Sharon Stone when she still was drop-dead hot that just feels weird and wrong.

That’s pretty much the whole chapter. Now we’ve met both women, it’s time for the…continued set-up. Darn you, short chapters.

Next Time: Dream

Yes, all the chapters have one-word titles.

By the way, anyone see the remake? Was it any good?
