Mega Man #20

Makes me want to break out the NES.

Mega Man #20

Archie Comics (February, 2012)

“Rock Of Ages”
WRITER: Ian Flynn
PENCILER: Ryan Jampole
INKER: Gary Martin
COLORIST: Matt Herms
LETTERER: John Workman
VARIANT COVER: Ryan Jampole (sorry, Mike Norton, that the cover they had in the folder and I was in a hurry)
EDITOR: Paul Kaminski

In the “not-too-distant-future”, Wily has discovered a time-machine, and Mega Man’s attempt to stop him leads to him bouncing around time and space. (Or future Mega Man games, one or the other.)

What they got right: I like the character designs for those Robot Masters we haven’t gotten to, yet.

What they got wrong: I don’t know if Flynn is trying to show off the stories he hopes to get to or doesn’t think he’ll be able to work on, but I don’t want to see this now. I want to see it when he has time to develop the story and the characters properly. Are they stalling for the Sonic crossover? I hope not. While the “countdown logo” says “4”, they’re not supposed to be doing the crossover until the spring and it’s only December.

Recommendation: I hate to say it because I enjoy this series so much, but unless you’ve been following along I’m not sure this is the issue to start on. Part of me wants to say pass but I hate to chase you off this great title that I usually wholeheartedly recommend every month.

  1. I think this issue was just an attempt to both spotlight the entire 25 year history of the franchise in a one-shot story as well as whet the appetite of readers who might not be up to speed (or even at all familiar) with Mega Man lore by setting up mysteries and questions to be answered at a later date. Perhaps a bit clumsily executed, but still enjoyable for me as a fan of both the comic and the game. 🙂
