Superman Family Adventures #8

“I’m getting this strange sense of deja vu.”

Superman Family Adventures #8

DC Comics (February, 2013)

WRITERS: Art Baltazar (also artist) and Franco
EDITOR: Kristy Quinn

A green laser hits a satellite with the Superman S/House of El crest and then contacts a trio of elemental beings. (You know, the ones that showed up in George Peréz’s story in Superman of New 52.) As they attack Superman and the gang, Supergirl finds records on the satellite showing a menace named Braniac, the one responsible for Krypton’s destruction. Guess where he’s headed now.

What they got right: How do you take the ideas of the New 52 and work them into a kid-friendly comic? Baltazar & Franco seem to be nailing that. I picked up this issue because other bloggers and reviewers were talking so highly of it and the way it presents New 52 material.

What they got wrong: This time “they” refers to the aforementioned bloggers/reviewers. This didn’t come off as a skewering of the New 52’s take on Superman. As they did in Tiny Titans, which this comic seems to spin off from, they’re taking elements of what happens in the mainline titles and having some fun with them. Parody at times, perhaps, but I didn’t see that here. If you want a “got wrong” from the creators, why is Lara back? That seems a bit off.

Recommendation: This may not be for most Superman fans but it’s still a fun story, and more Superman-esque than the New 52 is giving us. At least give it a look. I may grab the next issue to see how the Braniac plot works out.

Man, this is really my week for good comics without a stand out moment.

Bringing Lara in is an incredible innovation, I don’t think anyone’s ever attempted something with her character like this. Maybe they’re going for broke, seeing as the series is slated for cancellation anyway (my most emphatic BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!)

    • Maybe, but I still don’t see a point of her being there. Perhaps with the next few issues, and I will read the next one to see what they do with Braniac (he seems to be popping up a lot with his Young Justice appearance as well), we’ll get a reason for Lara not being dead.
