Bio-Booster Armor Guyver: Escape From Chronos
Viz Comics (July, 1995)
This will be the last of the collected comics. Next week it will be the individual issues, and the format will be the usual comic review format.
WRITER/ARTIST: Yoshiki Takaya ENGLISH ADAPTATION: Fred Burke & Toshifumi Yoshida TOUCH-UP ART/LETTERER: Bill Spicer COVER DESIGN: Viz Graphics ASSISTANT EDITOR: Toshifumi Yoshida EDITOR: Annette Roman
Our hero learns that Murakami was the prototype for Gyro’s Zoalord form but was part of an attempt to stop Gyro from also having the Guyver and unlimited power. We also learn that the human race is actually a creation of aliens to turn into their tools of war but for some reason they left and the Zoanoid bloodline was thinned out over the generations. Around that story, though, Valkus becomes suspicious of Gyro and sends new Enzyme IIs to challenge Murakami and the Guyvers, but after what happened with his father, Sho can no longer summon the Guyver. All of this isn’t doing Mizuki and favors psychologically.
My religious POV aside, my problem with this is why did these “Creators” design us as humans that turn into monsters instead of just creating the monsters? Assuming the Guyvers are their battle armor did they need Zoanoids? And why were only some humans turned into Zoanoids so that overtime the “Zoanoid blood” could “thin away”? Although I do like that werewolf reports could be blamed on Zoanoids who didn’t quite thin enough.
Otherwise the art and action are good, which is why this is the one of the few titles happily in my collection that doesn’t qualify as “kid friendly”. Still worth getting if you can find it in a language you can read. This issue especially what with the Zoanoid backstory and the reason the Guyvers exist. I did find this link (Amazon Affiliate Link). The last of the graphic novels I collected, like I said. Next week we start releases in the typical US style.
