Iron Man #179
Marvel (February, 1984)“Mission Into Darkness” WRITER: Denny O’Neil PENCILER: Luke McDonnell INKER: Steve Michell COLORIST: Roy G. Biv LETTERER: Rick Parker EDITOR: Mark Gruenwald
After assisting a group of Eternals, Rhodey’s next assignment is helping an eccentric movie director in Hong Kong. His last set of film had been destroyed without being opened as someone with superstrength caught the crate they were in. That someone is the Radioactive Man, who had himself been charged to protect a crate of machinery for a mysterious master. During all this Rhodey has another quick, painful headache. Thinking Iron Man was actually there to stop him, Radioactive Man attacks Iron Man but Rhodey is able to chase him off by sinking the equipment. Meanwhile, Stane freezes Tony’s personal assets to keep him from rising up again, and Tony learns his drinking buddy, Gretl, is pregnant.
What they got right: It used to be the only Rhodey-period Iron Man story I had was the annual after joining the West Coast Avengers. The more I read of him now, though, the more he comes off as a darn good Iron Man. I also like this direction, with Iron Man helping people with the kind of odd jobs only a superhero could pull off. The art is good as well.
What they got wrong: I’m not sure what point Clymenstra has in these stories except to get upset when her brother calls her “sis”. That’s really all I’ve got, though.
Recommendation: These are some good Iron Man stories, and I may enjoy them more than the usual ones. It’s worth giving a look to.
