Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.
Last time our heroes got closer to making contact with Black Sun, Luke finished his lightsaber, and Vader went hunting for a Jedi vehicle storage area whose owner happens to be Xizor’s business rival and the Dark Prince just happened to know about it and tell the man he’s trying to ruin. How will our games go on this issue?
As Luke continues his Force training along with his new lightsaber, a Tatooine version of a biker gang, with a biker gang version of the speeder bikes from Return Of The Jedi called swoop bikes. With his blaster still in the house, Luke has to fight these guys with nothing but his lightsaber. The fight is well described as Luke cuts the numbers down a bit (including a guy with an ax for a hand because even here George Lucas’s war on hands must be fought!) before escaping on a stolen swoop bike heading for where he hopes he has the advantage: Beggar’s Canyon!
Beggar’s Canyon, as you may recall from the first movie, is where Luke used to shoot womp rats in his T16. He knows the area very well. As Luke races from the “swooptroops” in the Canyon you can see why he had such an easy time running around the corridors of the Death Star. Perry gives a history to the Canyon, a series of small and rather dangerous canyons to be honest, It’s an action-packed scene I would have loved to have seen animated or performed in some form. The chase ends when Dash Rendar appears to chase them off, letting Luke know about the price Vader supposedly put on his head and that the riders worked for Jabba The Hutt!
Two scenes and they’re all about Luke’s adventure. That’s rare for this book but it’s the only way to do it. Switching to a different scene that probably wouldn’t have added to anyone’s story and give this particular adventure all of the focus was the right way to go. Still, next chapter should check in on the rest of the cast so they don’t feel left out
