As the Voltron teams spend some time together before the Explorer and the Vehicle Team set off on their next mission, Zarkon and Lotor have a meeting with the members of the nine kingdoms of the Drule Empire. And they aren’t happy with Zarkon causing an incident with the Galactic Union over Voltron. Meanwhile, Lotor has a rival suitor for Merla’s hand while Merla and Hagar continue to scheme. One night, as Allura tries to win Keith over they find Coran tied up and someone sabotaging the security in the control room. They’re surprised to see two Drules they believe are working for Zarkon (but actually work for Merla) and their helper…Sven! Sven and the Drules escape but what is Merla’s goal?

What they got right: I like the nod to Chip and Pidge being brothers, which they were in the show as a way to help tie the two Voltrons together. It’s too bad they didn’t have time to further explore that. I like how the art shows that one of the other kingdom rulers doesn’t seem to like Merla much, while the story shows another prince wants to wed Merla…which Lotor really doesn’t want to do so he’s probably wishing him luck. He only punched the guy because he’s a jerk. And while the nostalgic in me isn’t happy to see Sven turn evil it’s still more than he got to do for most of the TV series (since his counterpart died in GoLion) and it could be interesting to see where this goes.

What they got wrong: When did Hunk get a girlfriend? We haven’t really seen them interact with the people beyond the rebuilding. I also don’t think the Keith/Allura romance has gotten the build-up I’d like to see beyond initial attraction.

Recommendation: If you don’t know, you must be new here. Pick this series up!

  1. Sean says:

Did you notice that Hagar looks like a Jawa from Star Wars on the cover art? Also, Merla may be evil, but the artist draws her in a way that oozes of “hotness”. You may see beauty, but beware of what possible evil lies underneath that beauty.
