Don’t get me wrong, folks. I like Daphne Blake. I like Velma Dinkley. I’m not much of a mystery fan but a movie in which two teenage girls solve a bizarre crime in their school sounds good. The two concepts however don’t sound that good together, and yet that’s what we’re getting, a live-action Scooby-Doo movie without boys that is yet another origin for the Scooby Universe. Seriously, how many different stories are out there about how the group met in official media alone? Did this have to be Daphne and Velma to be a good mystery starring teen girls of different walks of life? Oh, and in this they were already besties thanks to the internet. I’m off two minds on that one but both agree this might have been better if it wasn’t a questionable adaptation and be allowed to do it’s own thing. Or have it feature the adult versions separated from the others. It sounds more like an episode where the girls have to fend for themselves rather than a full movie. Even an animated movie where the guys are looking for them…wait, that’s it. They want to do a live-action Scooby movie without going through the trouble of a live-action/CG dog.
Maybe Gotham and Krypton are worrying me, or the other times they split the gang up (it’s always more interesting to have all five together) in the past getting to me. The best we can hope for now is that it’s better than Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get A Clue and they don’t blame sexism for criticism.
