Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

We’re two chapters away from finishing this section of the book, with the third storyline coming right behind it. We’ve been transitioning from mourning Superman’s loss to trying to protect his legacy, and thus far the bad guy is winning. Paul Westfield is planning to clone Superman whether anyone likes it or not, and has plans for him beyond that. Between him and “Boris” from the Steel comic I reviewed earlier today I’m starting to wonder how many evil Pauls there are in the DC Universe.

However, the Newsboy Legion is planning to escape and warn the Daily Planet. We know there’s a failure somewhere because Superboy did exist. Meanwhile John Irons began his path to becoming Steel, and if he knew what Christopher Priest had in store for him he might change his mind. (Sorry, I’m still not over how bad that comic is. I just finished it a little while ago my time.) There are still two more “Supermen” to be introduced. Will they be foreshadowed here as well?

Chapter 17: Funeral For A Friend part 7

The main portion of the story is Lois receiving the “hot tip” with enough details that Supergirl will later be able to find it. I might have liked to have seen what the Newsboys did to get that info and get it out, but I’m glad they did. Knowing the government might cover it up even if at this point she didn’t know what Cadmus was, she went to Lex “Jr.” and Supergirl for help. So she smashes up the place to recover Superman’s body, and she does it invisibly. I would like to actually see that but I don’t know if the comic would do it as well as my mind’s eye did reading the prose adaptation. Then again I have a high imagination. She even smashed the computers so they would lose the information.

Too bad Westfield had a partial copy for his vile plot and they’re planning to proceed with the cloning. All Westfield cares about is what this will do for his career. Are we sure Donovan is the only villain to come from this place?

Then you have the heartbreaking stuff: Jonathan seems to be losing his mind to his memories and we get a reason why more or less. Jonathan was the one who came up with the idea for the Superman identity after Clark was mobbed when he rescued the plane, and he blames himself for Clark being killed because of his life as Superman. And then he has a heart attack. I know he survives this because he had to be killed by I think Brainiac just before the New 52 came along and I don’t agree with that decision. Why does nobody remember Clark’s parents died together originally? Because of his wrongly named parents in the serial? The Richard Donner movie? (That would give me yet another reason to not like that movie although there are more parts I like of it than Man Of Steel. As long time readers know however my problems with Snyder’s Superman has little to do with Donner’s Superman and everything to do with the comics, cartoons, and TV shows I grew up with.) It is a good cliffhanger to end the chapter on though.

Next week is the final chapter for Funeral For A Friend before we move to the final chapter for this story arc. How will it end, and will the high quality remain? Join us next week to find out.
