“War Of The Believers” part 3: “Capturing The Flag”

While Anatole didn’t order his men to kill Wilbur he does see that they’re the right duo for another assignment. As TV images at the bottom of the page show how high tensions currently are and efforts to calm the figurative raging storm threatening to envelop Macross Island and the SDF-1, he sends them, through Jessica, to kidnap Nina and leave a message for Dr. Lang and Roy that they have her and will contact them soon.
What they got right: I like the idea of having the news report on current tensions at the bottom of the page. While it does take a third of the page away from the story it’s a good summary of what’s going on and indicator of just how bad things currently are. Even Anatole is worried that he’s losing control, and I think Jessica is only going along with this because she’s in love with the jackass for some reason. Or maybe that’s a personal bias on my part.
What they got wrong: DeLepine is part of Alphabet Soup, so he’s still making that mistake of putting the onomatopoeia in caption boxes and using a bold font and not much else. It just doesn’t look good. Sometimes the news footage cuts off on the page in ways that make you go to the next page and have a more natural cut off before resuming the main story, which I don’t think is the flow they were going for given the layout of events versus news report.
Recommendation: This feels more like a Robotech story (or at least pre-Robotech) than what Titan is putting out. (I’ve been getting the reports from my friend and I just don’t care about this re-imagining they’re putting out. But then I rarely care about re-imaginings of things I’ve enjoyed or Simon Furman’s writing usually so again, I could be biased.) The series may be non-canon officially but it’s still worth giving a read.
