“If I Ruled the World!”

WRITER: Mark Millar

PENCILER: Aluir Amancio

INKER: Terry Austin

COLORIST: Marie Severin

SEPARATIONS: Digital Chameleon

LETTERER: Phil Felix

EDITOR: Mike McAvennie

Mr. Mxyzptlk returns to cause havoc again, but Parasite steals his magic. Mxyzptlk is forced to go to Superman for help while Parasite revels in his new power, which comes with the knowledge to use it. However, Parasite can only hold his energy for three days, and Superman tricks him into time traveling, thus stripping him of his power. And since Mxyzptlk wrote his name backwards earlier to show he was powerless he returns to the fifth dimension for the next ninety days. So sort of a numbers game really.

What they got right: I like the idea. What would happen if Parasite had Mxyzptlk’s fifth-dimensional magic and what havoc would he cause. And Superman was even prepared for when he got his magic back.

What they got wrong: Parasite travels three days into the future to show Superman he’s powerless, but Parasite himself didn’t go through three days linearly, so he should still have the stolen energies. Otherwise, when he first traveled back in time to mess with history it should be before he gained the magic or even became Parasite at one point. Why did he still have power then? I think we missed a step.

Recommendation: Don’t think too hard about the ending and what you have is a fun story. Worth checking out.
