Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.
Two chapters and a two page epilogue left to go. We’re almost done with this one. So far the Mini-Cons awoke on Earth, made three human friends, and now the Autobots and Decepticons are here. If we’re going to get to see what the Mini-Cons can do it better happen soon.
Chapter 5: Confrontation
I have to wonder how many Decepticons and Autobots were brought here. The narrator is talking about Megatron sending a squadron after the Mini-Cons but usually it’s just Megatron, Starscream, Cyclonus (none of them the G1 versions but namesakes, like two guys both named Bob), and Demolishor. With Megatron fighting Optimus at the time three Decepticons is hardly a squadron. Only Optimus and Megatron are named for their respective factions. Also, this fight has them knocking pieces off of each other, which is something you don’t see in most Transformers fights. Then again, who can tell what’s going in Michael Bay’s fight scenes?
Per usual, the Street Action Team take on the forms of Rad, Carlos, and Alexis rides, but it’s a bit more descriptive. High Wire is now a high-tech BMX bike with lights, Grindor has glowing wheels, and Sureshock gets a lot of flashing lights. They appear to be all metallic colored rather than the toys’ usual color scheme. They do form Perceptor (their gimmick was being a Combiner, which they brought with them to their Energon remolds) but now he can create a shield that can repel even Megatron? It’s been a while since I’ve watched the show but I don’t remember him being able to do that. Teitelbaum does get their positioning right in the combination though. He’s got a girl for his feet.
As far as whether or not the Mini-Cons do more than act as power boosters, unfortunately we don’t get to see that, at least in this book. The fight is over, with Megatron somehow detecting the rest of the Mini-Con ship on the moon and he calls his forces away. I wonder if we see the Mini-Cons powerlink with the larger Transformers in any of the future books?
Next week is the wrap-up of this book, the final chapter and the two page epilogue. How will this end? Find out in our final installment.
