The lightsaber. In the Star Wars universe (although I guess it’s a multiverse now that the previous expanded universe was tossed out by the new owners) the lightsaber is the signature weapon of Jedi and Sith alike. There’s a certain ceremony to finding a natural crystal to power it, though the knowledge to create a synthetic one exists. It’s just a laser sword but how it’s been used has elevated it to one of those legendary weapons of science fiction and fantasy. (Star Wars being both, science-fantasy.) The prequels introduced different styles and later works have further come up with interesting designs like one with a built-in blaster or two or more lightsabers on a spinning holder. Probably the most famous alternate incarnation is Darth Maul’s quarterstaff like twin-bladed lightsaber, because it’s really cool.

In the recent trailers for Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker there has been a version of Rey that appears to have gone over to the Sith side. Various pre-movie theories abound but all weapons enthusiast Shad Brooks of Shadiversity is focused on the saber itself and the way it deploys. Is this actually a good weapon? The expert says no, it may actually be dumber than the laser-blade crossguard on Kylo’s saber. As a warm-up though he takes a look at the double-bladed saber in general.

With that out of the way, let’s compare the best to the worst.
