Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.
And so we come to the final chapter of the book, and if not for a slightly longer than normal epilogue this would be our final installment of reviewing this book a chapter at a time. It’s the huge finale of…this part of the book, technically the third story in the book. Last time Joanna challenged Kerensky and how much of this was Ravill’s doing is up for debate. That’s the least spoilerly I can get for the intro.
For a series about people who fight in giant robots this is only the second such fight in the book. All the other fights have been between people not using giant robots and that feels like a shame. The characters and level of the fights make up for it, but can you truly make up for having giant robots and not using them? So this fight better deliver something amazing.
I’m happy to report it did. The fight between Joanna and Kerensky was action packed. Thurston does a good job setting up the scene as the battle goes back and forth between the two pilots, with Joanna winning thanks to a last minute bit of stratagem. I would love to see someone try to duplicate this battle. I don’t want to say too much more for the benefit of anyone who for whatever reason isn’t reading the book alongside. Trust me, you knew she’d probably win because this is her book (though I’m not saying if she lives…granted that will be spoiled next week with the epilogue) but how she does it you’ll have to read to find out.
As for Diana dealing with both Cholas and Castilla, it’s kind of a rematch of their earlier fight, only Ravill isn’t there to break it up. The fight crosses paths (for lack of a better term) with the Mech battle at one point but most of it is Diana trying to keep them from interfering. Cholas takes a fall and Castilla disappears. Odd because when she thought Diana killed him earlier she went into a rage but this time when she clearly did Castilla just runs. I wonder if these two ever meet again in battle? At any rate I’m glad I got to see Diana in action given she’s my favorite character in the book.
The chapter also takes a few minutes to talk a bit more about how relationships work in the Jade Falcon Clan compared to whatever’s going on between Cholas and Castilla. I was worried there wasn’t time for this given this was the last chapter and I wanted to see some climatic battles, but thankfully it doesn’t go too long and we get two really good battles going on semi-simultaneously.
Next time it’s the epilogue. It’s only eight pages but given how long this chapter was I kind of have to give it its own spot. So be here for the wrap-up of I Am Jade Falcon.
