The Monster Society Of Evil has captured the Marvel Family, so Uncle Dudley and Tawky Tawny call in the world’s top monster hunters. Yeah, guess who. They’re able to track down the Society but end up getting caught themselves until Velma and Shaggy say their usual catchphrases and transform into Marvels themselves. (Yes, it is explained but it’s more fun not to spoil that.) Our heroes are able to defeat the Monster Society with the help of the rescued Marvels.
What they got right: Again we get some good nods to the Marvel Family lore. Hoppy The Marvel Bunny gets mentioned, streets are named after Captain Marvel’s creators. It is neat to see Velma and Shaggy with superpowers and there’s continuity with the previous issues. They mention last issue’s talking gorillas and the fact that Shaggy and Scooby have gotten temporary superpowers before.
What they got wrong: The Marvel Family are terrible at maintaining secret identities, as in the Power Rangers are better at it and most of the time the villains know who they are. This is normal for them but it’s still something I wish they’d fix. How they beat Ibac and Sabbac…I’m just not buying it, even with the rules of how magic transformations words work in the former Earth-S side of the DC universe.
Recommendation: A fun adventure for fans of classic Captain Marvel, or Shazam, or whatever. Give this one a read.
