Scooby-Doo Team-Up #17

“Fly By Night”
WRITER: Sholly Fisch
ARTIST: Dario Brizuela
COLORIST: Franco Riesco
LETTERER: Saida Temofonte
EDITOR: Kristy Quinn
Strange things are afoot at the Midway City Museum, and without the curators around to call in Hawkman and Hawkgirl (because they ARE Hawkman and Hawkgirl secretly) the call goes out to Mystery Inc. The Hawks return just in time to join in only to find three of their usual foes are behind it all, seeking a book of alchemy. After exposing the villains (or getting them to expose themselves) our heroes manage to defeat them and save the artifacts.
What they got right: With the convoluted history Hawkman and Hawkgirl have gathered thanks to…let’s just admit its incompetence on the part of the writers and editors who insist they have the “definiative” origin, the comic had to skirt the line a bit to choose one. Actually, they really didn’t. Space cops from Thanagarr would have sufficed but they do a better combination job than the main continuity has often done. We lack mystery again but the gang do help solve the mystery and capture the crooks.
What they got wrong: Like I said, we could have ignored the history since it has no bearing on the story. And I still hate that the company named after Detective Comics can’t do a decent Scooby mystery.
Recommendation: A fun story but not really a must-own issue. Nice if you come across it or got the trade.
