A kid walking down the street is destroyed by a Sentinel for being a mutant. While the government declares this a success after the attack by Magneto’s Brotherhood Of Mutants another group is forming at the Xavier School For Gifted Mutants. Professor Charles Xavier has brought together Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Storm, Colossus, and Beast to form a new team in the hopes of averting a human/mutant war. They save young Bobbie Drake from another Sentinel, but the news catches this and Magneto instantly realizes it’s Charles in action. His own team–Toad, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch–isn’t going to be enough. It’s time to send his agent Wolverine to pay them a visit.
I’m not a big X-fan to begin with and even I found so much to hate about this comic. Storm and Beast hate their codenames and Storm is always complaining. Jean is a bit goofy. Cyclops is…about the same. Bobby is younger than everyone. Magneto is somehow more bloodthirsty than his regular universe counterpart, even killing an arms dealer for not getting him the bomb he wants by pulling his pacemaker out of his chest. Also, Wolverine is here and Ultimate Wolverine is somehow worse than regular Wolverine to the point that his just being here is a step down.
Speaking of a step down, I’m not a fan of the art. The women are too thin, with one girl in the opening splash page looking downright Liefeldian. Something weird is going on with Beast’s eyes. The colors are nice and that’s the only compliment I can really give this. Also the Sentinels appear to have been hitting the gym and it must be hard finding a good gym for giant killer robots.
Overall I have only one positive thing to say about this comic, and that’s the coloring. This was a terrible comic and I definitely don’t recommend it to anyone.
