Hopefully the secret is why this is called “Telepathy War” part 5 when it’s forcibly tied tangentially to the crossover.

Star Trek: Voyager #13

Marvel/Paramount Comics (January, 1999)

“Cloud Walkers” (It says “Telepathy War part 5 but only on the cover)

WRITER: Laurie S. Sutton

PENCILER: Terry Pallot

INKER: Al Milgrom

COLORIST: Matt Webb

LETTERER: Chris Eliopoulos

EDITOR: Tim Tuohy

Janeway attends her “battle sister” ceremony but they may need some more help from the Elessians when a chemical(?) important to creating the internal atmosphere runs low. Luckily they have a colony that can mine it from thick clouds. However, while Tom, Chakotay, and Tuvok go to see the mining in action some of the animals used start stampeding after an explosion. Tom is sent off course and finds mining pirates, which Voyager easily defeats.

What they got right: They have some interesting ideas on how the cloud mining works, working with the local wildlife (such as it is) to get what they need. We also seem some interesting things the Elessians do for fun.

What they got wrong: Claiming on the cover that this is tied to the “Telepathy War” crossover. Kes gets some psychic signals from the Alpha Quadrant, and that somehow how gives her images of a ship being attacked by the Borg, and that’s it. While this makes sense given they’re too far away from the events, it’s just there to try to get people to buy the comic as part of the event. Meanwhile the story itself doesn’t really do anything. It’s like the writer just wanted to show off these ideas she had but unlike the Leviathan of the previous story didn’t really know what to do with them. The world is nice but the story kind of suffers.

What did I think overall: The story isn’t necessary for the crossover and it’s kind of weak. There’s some nice worldbuilding and it isn’t a terrible story, just not a very interesting one. I’m not sure it’s a requirement for anything except maybe an epilogue to the previous storyline.
