preview for Kid Beowulf: The Blood-Bound Oath
I like when a Free Comic Book Day preview still works as a stand-alone tale. In this one a 12-year-old version of Beowulf (the series follows him and his brother Grendel) is challenged to race to an island because bullies keep misinterpreting what he says about their dads. During the race a sea creature attacks the bully and Beowulf fights to save him.
I rather enjoyed it. I don’t know the story of Beowulf so I don’t know how well this translates to the adult versions’ actual adventures but what’s presented here is a good preview. We get a sense of who Beowulf is as a person, that his dad is missing, and that he’s naive but a good guy at heart. The art is also pretty good. The only complaint are the random Norse expressions felt forced now and then.
Did this make me want to check out his full adventure? I wouldn’t mind seeing a full story. So successful preview.
