I wasn’t able to get the Free Comic Book Day version. Everybody was out. However, I returned a comic I picked up for someone who didn’t need it and used the store credit to get the original release. Lucky for me it’s the same cover so I can use the same image already in the library. I don’t know what’s different in the FCBD version.
DC X Sonic The Hedgehog #1
DC Comics (May, 2025)
“Chaos Crisis” part 1
WRITER: Ian Flynn
ARTIST: Adam Bryce Thomas
COLORIST: Matt Herms
SELECTED COVER ART: Pablo M. Collar (I think)
LETTERER: Becca Carey
EDITOR: Michael McCalister
Why summarize when I can show you the official adaptation. Sadly, no voice acting, which is odd when you remember there are actual YouTube channels built around dubbing comic pages. In fact there was one with dubbing but I went for the shorter official one. Better odds of still being up later on.
What they got right: The video cuts out a couple of the bonding moments between the selected pairings, the biggest one being Batman convincing Shadow to stay because he can tell they’ve both failed to protect some one (Batman and the Waynes, Shadow and Maria), and more of Tails and Cyborg connecting through their shared tech interests. They didn’t just pair Superman and Sonic due to their position in their respective continuities. Sonic and the Flash go fast, Superman and Knuckles have some shared history, Wonder Woman and Amy Rose are both the girls but you see how well they work together, and so on. I like seeing the heroes getting along immediately, with Sonic and Barry’s friendly speed rivalry being the closest thing to fighting each other. Instead they focus on Darkseid, the actual threat. I also really like the art. The comic is done in IDW’s Sonic comic art style (being on their world) and both the Justice League and Apocalypse forces look okay in this style.
What they got wrong: Personal preference would have been Superman and Tails as my favorite of both groups, but honestly the comic made the right choice in team-ups narratively. So no complaints, though I’m apparently out of the loop. When did Father Boxes start popping up, and who’s Krakkl? I know Sega no longer uses Mobius as the name of their planet like DIC and Archie did, but when did their planet become Earth?
What I think overall: A good start, and now there’s a second crossover going on. Might want to check them out someday. Good use of store credit, though the Free Comic Book Day version would have been better for this review cycle. Anything in there I missed out on? All I got was a preview for Absolute Martian Manhunter, which I really don’t care about.
