I have to wonder how brutally honest they want to be regarding Eiji Tsuburaya’s original goal for his production studio. To lighten this bit up, I hope no one minds if I voice this in the Danhausen mode (he’s a WWE wrestler, very nice, very evil, look him up). “You see, the Japanese government wasn’t paying me any more human monies for bald-faced propaganda attacking the West, so I! WAS! CURSED to transition to peacetime television work that, while less profitable in the short term, was available to a wider, more discerning audience. Matter of fact, my signature style of detailed miniature landscapes, vehicles, etc., was a prime attraction on the small screen, particularly when combined with ‘Twilight Zone’ type stories of mundane supernatural events with a side of giant monsters, stemming from my Godzilla work which you’ve no doubt heard of. And you know the best part, kiddies? YOU! CAN BE! CURSED to enjoy my foundational TV work on Tubi right now!!! Just search “Ultra Q,” and enjoy the work of Tsuburayahausen Productions in your own, uh, hausen.”

I tried to watch Ultra Q. Tried. X-Files vs Kaiju is somehow not my jam.

Perhaps a more modern version might work? “Neo Ultra Q” is the same premise but for the hip audiences of 2013 that were digging Matt Smith’s Doctor and taking a wild gamble on Stephen Amell’s Arrow. The production quality seems on par with David Tennant’s era, and the titles and plots absolutely scream in that direction, but everything is shot in desaturated browns, greens, and grays. At only 12 episodes, it’s a quick weekend watch, just different enough from Tsuburaya Pro’s usual “Ultraman only” mentality that it became weirdly endearing to me.

I’ve seen the ads and it didn’t connect with me either, probably for the same reasons I didn’t get into The X Files.
