BW’s Morning Article Link> My Comic Rage Shared

Feeling heroic yet, guys?

DC may be finally getting their act together, but considering the people who caused the problem are doing it makes me wonder how long that will last? After all Marvel seems to have traded their “heroic age” for one very much less heroic. Heroes fighting each other at Marvel used to be the joke, not the rule. And of course, the original Captain America was turned into a Nazi…I mean Hydra agents after the Red Skull turned the Cosmic Cube into a little girl and tricked her into making Cap evil. Because comics.

You may remember my previous reviews of Star Power, the webcomic about a superhero in a Star Trek style world (which is similar to an idea I had, but only in concept so it’s not off the table for me just yet and proof that it can work). It’s a great comic and you really need to check it out. Currently it updates on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with blogs by the creators on Tuesday and Thursday. The writer, Michael Terracciano, talks about his problems with the current state of the big two superhero comic companies and encourages indie superhero comics. There’s a bit more cursing than you see here at the Spotlight but I’m totally with him on this.

Filler Video: Plot Holes, 1 Of Which Isn’t Star Wars

If you recall my Chapter By Chapter review of the novelization of the original Total Recall you may recall me going over how Cohaagen’s plan was really kind of stupid. Not that the plans of the aliens who made the machine (original to the novel) made any sense. Movie or novel they were plans that shouldn’t have worked. Cohaagen’s plan only failed because it was Arnold Schwarzenegger. The aliens plan succeeded…I think…because you’re guess is as good as mine.

Seriously, what was even the No’ui’s plan?

However, this is nothing new as plans that shouldn’t work in movies somehow do. And I think the reason Cracked contributor Daniel O’Brien threw the Ocean’s Eleven remake and The Dark Knight in there is that he ran out of Star Wars plans that didn’t make sense but he really just wanted to do that series.

The Movie Monster Game

The Movie Monster Game (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

In the month of May Turner Classic Movies will be doing a monster movie marathon on Thursday nights. Some will be smaller monsters like the Creature From The Black Lagoon and the first movie adaptation of Swamp Thing, but there will also be a lot of giant monsters, both from Japan and the 1950s US movies. Draconic Versus, who will host some of the live tweets under the hashtag #TCMParty, has the full list of what will be airing.

They’re even including The Giant Claw, which features an ugly bird monster (and by ugly I mean the prop–the effects were laughable bad even for 1957) that I swear I had nightmares about long before I even heard of this movie. Serious, I had a few dreams as a kid of this monster movie involving a large, stinky bird creature that captured cars with people still inside them. Weird, right?

Chapter By Chapter: 1st Phase Shifters & The Omega Capsule ch. 11

Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Our trio of travelers, who came here only to learn about this whole physical existence thing, now find themselves the only chance for saving Earth. They’re best hope is to master a teleporting technique that requires two or more of them working together. Meanwhile one of our heroes appears to be falling for a local Earth girl. How will this all come together to stop a brother who turned himself evil? Perhaps we’ll find out more in today’s chapter.

Chapter 11: The Key

Our image for this chapter is a simple Earth key but I suspect it is only a metaphor. My prediction is this has something to do with the key to the Omega Capsule.
