BW’s Daily Article Link> Strong Women In Science Fiction

Today’s writers so badly want to be first that they’ll ignore the past to pull it off. One of those are “we finally have a strong woman in sci-fi and you don’t like it”. It’s more like “we have a woman acting like a man in sci-fi because we can’t write strong women” because sci-fi already has a rich history of strong women in leading and supporting roles in the story, both hero and villain. Of course novelist Caroline Furlong sticks to novels in her list (a couple of which have been made into movies or comics, or ignored by the new owners) of sci-fi’s strong heroines. Additionally she also makes a short defense of adventure sci-fi as the elitists have pushed the hard sci-fi back into the spotlight. Although can you call it hard sci-fi when the science makes less sense than the intentionally made-up variety sometimes?

Jake & Leon #542: A Little Too Late

They aren’t even kind to their own characters, so why would they care about mine?

So next week’s comic we’ll talk about the Super Family news because there isn’t enough to talk about at the moment for a full article. Besides, this week is continuing the Many, Many Intros Of Scooby-Doo for October and that’s going to take time, while I still working on Captain Yuletide. Then of course there’s Monday’s Chapter By Chapter review of Tekwar still going on.

Meanwhile, over at The Clutter Reports I had dusting to do, so I simply reposted my old review of Superman: War Of The Worlds, with some minor tweaking since that isn’t the same crowd over there as here and they may not have heard of the Martian Manhunter or some of the other references I don’t have to explain to most of the BW readers.

So we’re done with Star Trek comics until I get any more in. That leads to the question of what do I replace it with? I’m starting to run out of old comics. Robotech still has a long way to go, once Spider-Man: The Manga is done I have some Marvels hanging out on ComiXology while I go over other ComiXology series on Saturday. Star Blazers is just in my “shorter series and one-shots” position on Friday, and while I can go on in that route and just make Star Blazers its own spot that will only hold for a few months and I still need to have something ready for when Robotech finally ends.

Therefore Friday is going to be something new and something I’ve wanted to review at least around the time I was pushing through Seduction Of The Innocent. Comics in public domain are available online legally and I’m going to start reviewing them. So the current pattern starting this week Monday thru Saturday is….

  • MONDAY: Robotech
  • TUESDAY: Marvel multiverse leftovers
  • WEDNESDAY: Sonic The Hedgehog
  • THURSDAY: Star Blazers/smaller series and one shots
  • FRIDAY: Golden Age public domain (I’ll be starting with the original Blue Beetle, rookie patrolman Dan Garrett, from Mystery Men Comics to his solo series. We’ll see where we go from there.)
  • SATURDAY: My ComiXology library, and when that finishes I’ll start digging into my Drive Thru Comics library
  • SUNDAY: I do a Clutter Report and Jake & Leon and that’s it

Hopefully you’ll find the new “Yesterday’s” Comic schedule to your liking. If not, enjoy the ones you like and have a great week!

Saturday Night Showcase> Ultraman Dyna

Yep, it’s another Ultraman series. It’s a franchise I like promoting, and Ultraman Dyna is a series that ties in to both Ultraman Tiga, a direct continuation of set in that universe, and the current Ultraman Decker, as they share an enemy. Plus the creator of the GUTS-Select in that universe, shared with Ultraman Trigger, was transported from the Tiga and Dyna dimension…unlike Marvel’s multiverse I don’t think these have designations. Apparently these two particular Ultraman universes have a link.

After Tiga’s final victory the Earth is at peace and going forward to Mars…because another link between these two universes is setting up colonies on Mars for some reason. Then the Spheres attack a group of trainees…including headstrong Shin Asuka, who will become the next generation of Tiga…before Trigger officially took the name. Enjoy.

The Many, MANY Intros Of Scooby-Doo: Let’s Go To The Movies

“And now Frank Miller with the weather. Frank?”

For the third year of Scooby-Doo, CBS asked Hanna-Barbera to change things up. Get used to that because ABC seemed to want something new every year when they took over after this. What we got was The New Scooby-Doo Movies, which really weren’t movies but they were a full hour of Saturday morning timeslot. I guess they were low on shows or something and needed a full schedule. I don’t know what they were thinking over at CBS and HB but the thought was something like this:

“Okay, so we have the gang meeting a different celebrity every week. Pad the show out so that the celebrities get to show off without taking time away from the mystery and kids will love it. Plus, since the kids of our time period don’t recoil in horror from black and white reruns like a vampire on a sunny day we can use dead and retired famous people and characters, just with different actors. It’ll be great!”

Well, we do remember it fondly so they got something right. Does that include the intro?
