Why Change The Anime Script When Dubbing?

“Dang it, Gohan! This isn’t the Fourth Of July. Or America. Or a version of Earth where either matters!”

Previously in this set of videos from the Cartoon Cypher on dubbing I wanted to post they’ve taken a look at specific dubs: Cowboy Bebop, Ghost Stories, and FLCL. The first was a dub that even sub fans seem to prefer, the second a gag dub officially released, and the third something that seems hard to dub because it’s just so crazy. They may have more dub examinations and I’ll link to their channel at the end of the review so you can find out for yourself, but I’m not going to post their entire library and I think we all get the point by now. Each dub has their own requirements and their own critiques, both positive and negative. I want to pull back now and look at a more general topic, since the final video in this set (coming in two weeks, so if you’re tired of this discussion just bear with me a bit longer) is also a general perspective on the ongoing debate between subtitled and dubbed.

One of the complaints lodged by sub-only fans against the dub even existing is that there are changes to the script between the Japanese and English version. When we get to the Japanese Beast Wars intros next week, barring external events, you’ll see it’s not exactly a one-way street with how they approached the series. While it has gotten better in some ways it’s gotten worse in others thanks to simultaneous dubbing so that US fans can see a new anime episode almost immediately after it airs in Japan, possibly to ward off fansubs until the official release can be put out. However, there are other translation errors to be addressed, and as the host points out in this video there’s a good reason to address them, changes and all. Note that there is a quick nude scene.

BW Morning Video: Batman As Written By AI

I’ve heard debate as to whether or not this is fake and not actually written by AI, but it’s funny either way. I guess Midnight’s Edge After Dark has a sense of humor.

Chapter By Chapter: The Merry Adv Of Robin Hood part third ch. 1

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Remember, the book is in public domain. Download or read the ebook online legally and for free at Project Gutenberg, Google Books or the Internet Archive among other sites, or check out the audiobook from LibriVox. You can also use a print copy. In either case my copy may not match up with yours chapter-wise. Follow along with the very-long subtitle. For this chapter:

Part Third

Recounting How Allan A Dale Was Brought to Robin Hood, Who Promised to Help Him in Trouble. Also How Robin Sought the Curtal Friar of Fountain Abbey With That Aim in View. Likewise, How Robin Hood Brought Two True Lovers Together Who Would Else Have Been Made Unhappy All Their Lives

A new trio of tales await us. I’m guessing these stories are not exactly in chronological order given that in the previous part they already knew Allan A Dale and here it sounds like it’s their first meeting. I’m also thinking it’s A Dale who is one of the lovers. The big question here is whether or not the “curtal friar” is Friar Tuck? In other works Allan is a minstrel and doesn’t do much (if he shows up at all) besides play music and sing about Robin’s legend. What will he be like here I wonder? As this book came out in the 1800s, closer to the time of the actual legends I’m betting it’s closer to them than Hollywood has been.

Jake & Leon #426: Let’s Make A Special Report

Folks in the Eastern time zone, back me up here.

This may or may not be happening in other time zones, I can only speak for me living in Connecticut. For the past month or so it seems like CBS News keeps interrupting for unnecessary “special” reports at least once a week. I can understand something that other networks may interrupt for. In a few cases I could even understand a quick report and back to the show. However, when half or more of Let’s Make A Deal keeps getting cut into by some press conference even C-Span isn’t considering covering, when you have a round table discussion and constantly going to reporters in the field for something a local station should be covering with maybe a story on the CBS Evening News, and you do it at least once a week I start questioning your motives. I was hoping that this summer I could miss the other episodes from when the special reports once or twice a month I missed during the year, but that didn’t happen, and half of premiere week, including a full episode for some stupid hearing nobody really cares about, was cut off entirely. If I wanted to watch the news at breakfast I WOULD BE WATCHING A NEWS CHANNEL, NOT A GAME SHOW WITH THE OCCASIONAL IMPROV MOMENT! If this keeps up I may just stop watching the show entirely or watch something else in the morning and see if I can catch it later that day. I want to know who at CBS is trying to kill the rating on Let’s Make A Deal. Are they jealous of Wayne Brady’s success on weekday mornings? Do they wish they had Cat Gray’s music talents or Jonathan Mangum’s comedic talents? Did Tiffany Coine turn them down for the prom? Did I get everyone?

Sorry, I had to rant. With that out of the way let’s talk about more fun things like this week’s Clutter Report. It’s a look at the Micromaster Aerialbots, another review from the Transformers Universe line, the reason things have been so Transformer heavy the past few weekends.

This week I’m finishing Star Trek: Untold Voyages but more Star Trek comic reviews are coming. It’s also the last of the reprints so I can move to the next issue of Iron Man already. Also I’m doing more Simpsons/Radioactive Man comics but I’ve actually reviewed them before as part of Today’s Comic when they first came out. There are so few left I figured “what the heck, just repost them”. It’s not like the other series I stopped because I caught up like Moonstone’s Phantom and IDW’s Transformers. I do want to look at the newest Joker controversy that is about something other than adaptation errors. There’s also more Robin Hood, more Transformers intros, more dub versus sub discussions, and who knows what else this week. Hope you find something in all that which interests you. Have a good week, folks!
