BW’s Morning Article Link: Bendis Is Kryptonite

When DC announced “Bendis is coming”, Superman fans took that as a warning. While he isn’t a bad writer that doesn’t make him a good fit for Superman, or at least the Superman and Jon Kent Superboy we’ve been getting in the Rebirth period of DC. Of course Dan DiDio hates that period because it wasn’t as dark and edgy as his New 52 and is working to create a “Brand New 52” in the eyes of many DC fans, right down to publishing around 52 comics again. Well, Bendis’ decision to age up Superboy and damage the Kent family unit is not making fans happy and the sales numbers reflect that. Can we get him off of this character now?Or just stick in him in the Wonder Comics imprint that’s doing questionable things but is at least it’s own continuity? DiDio can get his darker fixation there and leave the rest of us the Rebirth DC Universe we actually want.

Or did DiDio really think the trunks was our only complaint?

Jake & Leon #393: Caption Craze

Can you tell I ran out of comment before I ran out of comic?

Actually I just didn’t want to make a comic about my continuing cable/internet/phone company issues. Short version: the new company didn’t work out…ON DAY 1! So we decided to go back to the old one for various reasons, and that happens this week. (No, I’m not getting my old phone number back but at least we still have the house phone. For now.) I’m going to try to spare you another flood of filler video postings and do some actual writing this week, which I’ll get to in a moment, but I need a day to reset all our wifi passwords and get other things operational. And they’re coming early in the morning so sleep is going to be a factor as well. Of course. Hopefully you won’t notice on the site.

Over at The Clutter Reports this week I had a birthday party to go to so what I ended up doing was more of a partial project as it’s time to better organize the junk in my art corner. I’m hoping for a better report next week.

Back to BW related stuff. Leon is actually referring to the latest old BW Video Review to get the closed caption treatment. After my tests of Challenge Of The GoBots and The Little Drummer Boy, I’m now going through in proper order, which means my first every video review, Godzilla Versus King Ghidorah, is now available with closed captions for the hearing impaired and low-volume required. I do need to clean the titles up a bit as I write this but I hope to do that this week before getting into the next review in order, the OTHER GoBots review video. Meanwhile, I want to have a Sing Me A Story and a My Favorite Intros this week. If I can work it in this week, another He-Man Newspaper Comic Strip review, but if not I’ll try for next week on that one. Now if we can only be done with musical TV providers maybe I can get the next video review done in time to coordinate with a related comic series review. We’ll see what happens. I still have to find paid work after all.

What Star Wars Can Learn From Lego’s The Freemaker Adventures (A Saturday Night Showcase Special)

Remember my Jake & Leon comic from last Sunday?

Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures is part of my head canon.

I said in the accompanying article that Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures might work as semi-canon the more I thought about it. In tonight’s special installment of Saturday Night Showcase I plan to prove my point, or at least give it a darn good shot. First I should show you the series itself if I can. (Apologies to non-US markets if this doesn’t work or those of you in the archives if Disney XD’s YouTube channel takes this stuff down.)

As I stated in the Lego Batman Movie review there have been a number of direct-to-video movies and TV series forming a Lego multiverse outside of the theatrical Lego Movieverse. Unlike the theatrical films these movies and specials are not written like a child at play but are regular parodies of the franchise in question made for kids but with enough nods and winks that the adult fans of the franchise can enjoy it as well. This started with their Lego video games, most notably their Lego Star Wars games, and evolved into movies and shows.

Created by Bill Motz and Bob Roth, the show features a strong ongoing storyline and more dramatic moments than the two miniseries Lego produced in the SWU, Droids Tales and The Yoda Chronicles. It follows the adventures of an independent salvage and repair family, the titular Freemakers, as they’re drawn into the war between the Imperial Empire and the Rebel Alliance after the events of The Empire Strikes Back and both before (in season one) and during (season two) Return Of The Jedi. How are they drawn in? One of them has Force abilities we haven’t seen in the Star Wars Universe before, or at least interpreted this way not because of the comedic elements but because it does something the most recent trilogy hasn’t done nearly as well…lore building. Watch the first episode and get a taste for the show and I’ll explain.

Finally Watched…Spider-Man: Homecoming

While I’ve always been more of a DC fan than a Marvel fan, there are some Marvel heroes I like and grew up with. Spider-Man is one of them. I grew up with the 60s cartoon thanks to reruns and Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends was one of my Saturday morning staples. I also used to watch USA Network’s Thanksgiving marathon of the live-action series with Nicholas Hammond. Also one of my first comics was a Spider-Man comic, just not the best one to come in on. I do enjoy a good Spider-Man story.

I haven’t seen the Spider-Man movies from Sony that people are often down on, the studio-interfering Spider-Man 3 and the two Amazing Spider-Man movies, and I can’t get to the theater to watch Into The Spider-Verse but I’ve heard good things about it. I did finally get to see Spider-Man: Homecoming, the long-awaited debut of the web-head into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Sony still holds the license on the Spider corner of the Marvel multiverse they decided to partner with Marvel Studios so fans can finally see Marvel’s original flagship character in the continuity he belongs in. The question is how well did the transfer go? Well, since I reviewed the trailer for the sequel earlier this week it seemed right to review the movie at the end of it.
