I love mini-comics. Those little comics that come packed with toys, cereal, snack cakes…I had one that came with a pair of shoes. Tonight’s battle come from one such mini-comic. Masters of the Universe figures have come with mini-comics through most if not all of it’s run. First they made their own, then let DC make their comics (as they did for the early MASK figures), then took over again. The latter was closer to the Filmation series, and our tale comes from before then.

The Warm-Up:

During this part of the series, Mattel had decided to spice things up on the planet of Eternia by introducing a third collum, the evil Horde under the command of Hordak and living in the Fright Zone. The Horde would actually appear not on the MOTU cartoon but on She-Ra: Princess of Power, based on the girl-targeted spin-off line. Since the Princess of Power minicomics had He-Man’s sister fighting Catra over jewels or Bo (as in Beau, I guess, but he was a bowman, and the male version of Lois Lane), sending the Horde to Etheria was probably a good idea. Today, a visitor comes to the Fright Zone.

How does the third part talk without a head?

Seriously, that’s how his name is supposed to be said.

Mod..u…lok used to be a slave of Skeletor’s, but decided to escape and join the Horde in hopes of better treatment. (Guess nobody told him Hordak trained Skeletor in the ways of evil.) As a bonus, he’s come with a plan to get into Castle Grayskull, because getting the secrets of Grayskull is just what people do. They’re going to be disappointed when all they find are cookbooks.

Modulok’s plan is pretty simple. Send himself in pieces to the Heroic Warriors and hope they take him to Grayskull. Oddly, this is exactly what Teela and Adam do, and while Modulok steals a “forbidden weapon” (why does nobody think to destroy these WMD’s?), our heroes go to meet the Sorceress, who for some reason is doing her Wizard of Oz impersonation.

He-Man only wears the latest in Eternian fashion. Which isn't saying much.

 So armed with the lastest in toy-selling evil-smashing gear…oh, wait, Mod..u…lok has jumped the gun!

The Fight:

Modulok gets past Teela and out of Grayskull. Proving his stupidity loyalty to Hordak, he brings him the “forbidden weapon”, which is a force field nothing can penetrate. Skeletor, already annoyed that his slave betrayed him (it’s Skeletor logic, just go with it), now has to team-up with He-Man to stop Hordak.

Hey, stupid, stay INSIDE the invincible force field!

So while Modulok gets some payback, He-Man is told to unleash his new power:

The toy is just a cap gun that activates when you punch. Really.

He-Man destroys the weapon (about time) and the bad guys flee. Well, except Skeletor, who realises someone left the door open.

Who needs a garage door opener?

The Aftermath:

It’s a minicomic. That’s pretty much it.
