Godzilla #13
FINAL ISSUE
IDW Publishing (May, 2013)
WRITER: Duane Swierczynski ARTIST: Simon Gane COLORIST: Ronda Pattison SELECTED COVER ART: Bob Eggleton LETTERER/CREATIVE CONSULTANT: Chris Mowry EDITOR: Bobby Curnow
It’s the final battle between Godzilla and Keizer Ghidorah, and even Rodan and Clare get to take a few shots at the three-headed…wait, two-headed…well, I guess he won’t need a hat anymore. Godzilla saves the day (should you be surprised), but Boxer isn’t read to forgive and forget, even at the cost of his life.
What they got right: The fight between Keizer Ghidorah and Godzilla is intense. KG is blasting Godzilla all over New York City and it’s amazing. Also, no 9-11 flashbacks, Man Of Steel! This is how you bust up a city without opening old wounds!
What they got wrong: Rodan only shows up to show up. Really, he gets one swipe in and gets knock out of the rest of the fight. Anguirus would have been more in line with that. Also, as much as I jokingly cheer Boxer’s death he really goes out like a moron. All the way back in Kingdom Of Monsters some guy tries to kill Godzilla by blowing himself up, distraught that his kids were Godzilla’s first victim. That made sense because he was still in a state of shock and confusion and nobody knew how powerful this new monster was. Here Boxer knows full well how strong Godzilla is, just fought alongside him to protect the Earth from the space monsters, and he still wants to kill him because of his daughter…who wasn’t actually killed by Godzilla but by those idiots with the guns if they were the same kid and the art seems to imply that. Compare that to the guy in Godzilla Vs. Space Godzilla who decided not to kill Godzilla today after numerous attempts the whole movie and calls for revenge. Wau to make your intended hero look like a moron. I didn’t like him but that seems a stupid way to go.
Recommendation: A great finish to this series. Personally I’d ignore the first half, with the whole “Monster Kill Crew” nonsense and just wait until the space monsters started attacking. It the best part of the storyline.
Okay, okay, I had to get that last joke in. Here’s the real nomination.
