Mega Man #29
Archie Comics (November, 2013)“The Curse Of Ra Moon” part 1″Bad Moon Rising” WRITER: Ian Flynn PENCILER: Mike Cavallro INKER: Gary Martin COLORIST: Matt Herms LETTERER: John Workman “SELECTED” COVER ART: Dean Haspiel & Steve Downer ASSISTANT EDITOR: Vincent Lovally EDITOR: Paul Kaminski
Dr. Light, aided by Dr. Pedro Astil and his robot, Plant Man, found a way to bring Mega Man and some of the good Robot Masters back online. This doesn’t help Roll, who is still damaged and mysterious force killing technology is still active. Dr. Astil encountered something like it before and his story sends Mega Man, Rush, Cut Man, Bomb Man, and Guts Man to where Ra Moon is keeping Wily prisoner. But with the aid of Break Man, Wily may have a plan of his own.
What they got right: I like how Break Man/Proto Man/Blues reacts to what’s happened. He wanted to take on Mega Man, but didn’t intend for Roll to get hurt and even gives Light the information he needs to create a defense to Ra Moon’s effect. Also, we see Wily is trying to stop Ra Moon because he doesn’t want to see people destroyed, just controlled. We saw this in his conflict with Eggman during the “Worlds Collide” crossover with the Sonic titles. It isn’t because he’s a villain in a kids comic but because his ambitions do not make him psychotic.
What they got wrong: Astil’s appearance, and his history with what we learn was Ra Moon is kind of convenient. They could just as easily tracked the source of the disturbance through satellites, since they still work (as evidenced by Proto Man being able to teleport..although needing to do short jumps rather than a long-distance transport). Unless they’re setting up his appearance in a future adaptation of Mega Man 6, giving us at least one character to care about during that arc.
Recommendation: This is one of the titles I want to try to keep getting. It’s what I’m looking for in a superhero comic, and I happen to enjoy the games. Nothing stood out for a Best Scene moment but it’s still a good read.
