Battletech #2

I don’t think that’s an actual Mech design.

Battletech #2

Blackthorne Publishing (February, 1988)

WRITER: Joe Judt
ARTISTS: Pat Zircher & Jim Nelson
LETTERER/EDITOR: John Stephenson

The survivors steal the Steiner Mechs they appropriated, although their leader dies in the escape. The remaining three go Merc with another group in the Kurta house (which may or may not be part of the Draconis Combine, as I suggested last night–remember that I only have the cartoon, novel, and toon-based playbook to go by). However, the Steiners have a tracker on their Mechs, and the one survivor of this battle may not be happy about it.

What they got right: While I’m sure switching to black and white in this issue was more to save costs, I think it serves the art better. The story ends here and next issue will focus on a different group, which I think works since there isn’t a clear villain until the Clans arrive (and even then it’s debatable in-game and possibly in the show as well).

What they got wrong: Why take the guy who was ready to turn you in after pretending to be part of your escape attempt?

Recommendation: As with last issue, only fans of the game might really get into this series, but it is a good story if you come across it.
