The Transformers #27
Marvel Comics (April, 1987)“King Of The Hill” WRITER: Bob Budiansky PENCILER: Don Perlin INKERS: Ian Akin & Brian Garvey LETTERER: Janice Chiang COLORIST: Nel Yomtov EDITOR: Don Daley
Grimlock is back and looking for command of the Autobots, and he and the Dinobots don’t care who they have to beat up to get it! Meanwhile, the Decepticons want the Ark’s resources after the Cybertronian fuel auditor for the ‘Cons, Ratbat, decides the space bridge is too inefficient. So they send one last thing through…Trypticon! The Dinobots plan to just swoop (no pun intended) in and take over once the giant Decepticon “softens them up”, but a lone human may find Grimlock’s conscience.
What they got right: Unaware of what was to come, it was good to see the Dinobots back in action. There’s a bit of growth for Grimlock (which will sadly be lost next issue) and the fight between the dinosaur Transformers was pretty darn good. I even used it for a Friday Night Fight entry.
What they got wrong: On the other hand this was a Transformer that turned into a city! (Although they all looked liked bases to me, we were told they were cities. Maybe an encased city?) Sure, we had battlestation mode, but Trypticon could have been such a larger threat, as he was in the cartoon and recent video games. Still, that’s more than Metroplex, his opposite number in the Autobots, ever had. All he has is an entry in Transformers Universe. It just feel like a wasted opportunity that we’ll see again with Fortress Maximus and Scorponok.
Other notes: I’ve never owned the figure but from what I’ve heard, his toady, Wipe-Out, never came with Trypticon. Maybe it was intended, like all the robots that came, and sometimes linked to, Metroplex?
Recommendation: If Grimlock had remembered what he had learned by the end of this issue I might not hate him so much. I expected him to be different, and more proactive than Optimus. We’ll see what I got in later installments, but this is still a good issue to have, and it started a new chapter in the Autobots’ lives. It’s worth picking up.
