Transformers: Windblade #2
IDW Publishing (May, 2014)WRITER: Mairghread Scott ARTIST: Sarah Stone (includes selected cover) LETTERER: Chris Mowry ASSISTANT EDITOR: Rebecca Huard EDITOR: John Barber
Windblade is convinced that Starscream tried to kill her off. Together with Chromia and Ironhide (and a little help from Waspinator of all bots, plus Autobots that are less on her side than they hate Starscream) the cityspeaker learns why her charge isn’t healing, and the odds of Starscream and Rattrap being behind it is very high.
What they got right: This morning I was talking about Starscream as a good schemer in the Marvel books under Budiansky (at least during the Underbase Saga). Here we have that same Starscream but with a bit more of a vicious streak to him. I kind of like it. This feels like what, to me, Starscream should be like instead of the cowardly suck-up who dreams of total power that we usually get.
What they got wrong: Any problems I have with this story I can’t put at Scott’s feet. She’s just working with the Transformers universe she was given, and as I’ve noted many times IDW’s direction is not what I want out of my Transformers tales.
Recommendation: Scott’s the only reason I’m bothering with this comic because I like what she did in the Prime universe so it’s worth a read for that. But I think after this I’m going back to ignoring this version of Transformers.
