Shogun Warriors #14
Marvel (March, 1980)
“Should Heroes Fail…” WRITER: Doug Moench PENCILER: Herb Trimpe INKER: Mike Esposito COLORIST: Bob Sharen LETTERER: John Costanza EDITOR: Al Milgrom
Doctor Demonicus pits his monsters, who the Warriors fared poorly against last time, together against the trio. Only through teamwork will our heroes take out Starchild, Cerebrus, and the Hand Of Five and stop Demonicus’ meteor from crashing into the Earth!
What they got right: You all remember Demonicus from Godzilla, right? Moench wrote both comics so it’s neat to see him back challenging more Japanese licensing. (And Demonicus is a bigot anyway.) There’s also a cameo by Gabe and Dum Dum when the Warriors deliver Demonicus to the proper authorities, where Red Ronin is mentioned, placing this in official Marvel continuity. (Although I don’t know if they still are like Godzilla and Red Ronin.) It’s good seeing the trio of robots work together.
What they got wrong: Oh look, the American is the jerk with the ego. Never seen that in an international team before.
Recommendation: These are the only two issues I have but I want to get the rest. These aren’t the bestest stories ever or anything but giant robots battling giant monsters is something I can easily get behind. If you agree, give this series a try.
