Darkhawk #11
Marvel (April, 1992)
“Heart Of The Hawk” part 5: “The Antidote For Civilization” WRITER: Danny Fingeroth PENCILER: Mike Manley INKER: Ricardo Villagran COLORIST: Joe Rosas LETTERER: Bill Oakley EDITOR: Nel Yomtov
As Darkhawk battles Venom he realizes the symbiote doesn’t like fire when he is chased off by the burning plane. However, Venom realizes Darkhawk is both innocent and dying and fakes his death to allow Darkhawk to leave. The hero then finds Bazin and his father but fighting Bazin’s goons and Lodestone keeps him from rescuing his dad. Bazin goes to attack Darkhawk after Lodestone has him quartered, but Mike sacrifices himself to save Darkhawk and appears to have killed Bazin as well. Darkhawk decides to return to his family, not knowing his brother is near death and his mother is captured by the cops behind Savage Steel, but passes out thanks to his missing amulet and Tombstone trying to use a mystic to unlock the amulet’s power.
What they got right: Hey, Darkhawk got to fight one of his villains for a change instead of Spider-Man’s. Meanwhile, events still swirl around the Powell family.
What they got wrong: Knowing what I know now it still feels like Darkhawk made the wrong move and even though we’ll learn later that things aren’t what they appear with Bazin and Mike Powell, maybe the storyline should have been about Darkhawk getting his amulet back. Also, Darkhawk still fought a Spidey villain for a while. He needs more of his own villains.
Recommendation: This is still a good storyline but it could have been better at this point. Hopefully the payoff is worth it, but I still recommend the arc.
