Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.
Luke just escaped the bounty hunters, but he and his friends still have to worry about getting past Darth Vader. Well, except for Leia and Chewbacca, who may be face-to-face with a bigger threat…Prince Xizor, leader of the criminal organization Black Sun. Our tale continues.
Two events going on and going back and forth was done organically to the story. As it should be. As it should have been all story.
First it’s the quieter time with Leia and Xizor. Here’s where we learn Falleen can emit pheromones to entice mates of the opposite gender. Both male and female can do this and Xizor even flashes back to his first experience with a lady Falleen…”blossoming” as he calls it. Apparently there are also ways to push your pheromone release to the maximum using meditation and exercises for maximum pervyness. To his credit he doesn’t use the cameras to peek on her in her quarters, but only to savor her later. So I guess he wouldn’t hack a woman’s cell phone to see her naked. Which means Xizor is actually LESS of a pervert than certain hackers out there. And considering this is a man willing to use a natural cheat to have his way with Leia and even brags that no matter how loyal you are to your husband he can snag you, that should make them look even worse.
As for Leia, she did get a “test whiff” of his pheromones, and he’s using other ways of trying to woo her, like a beautiful room with warm carpeting and beautiful clothes in her closet that just happen to be her size and a hot tub to soak in. He’s trying to hide how he really seduces women and sadly Leia is fighting those urges for the sake of her mission and her love of Han. And still less of a perv than phone hackers. Just remember that.
In less sexy events, Lando is trying to get the hyperdrive fixed just as Luke begins to sense Vader is nearby. Vader can also sense…someone and is only guessing it’s Luke. In a rare case of actually taking advice from his men rather than Force-chocking them he agrees to send fighter in to look for them rather than taking the over-sized Star Destroyer into the asteroid belt. Where one of these scenes in previous chapters seemed to simply remind the audience of a plot or subplot going on, here it actually shows our heroes in a potentially dangerous situation. Again, that’s how you do it and how it should have been done before. If the scene adds nothing to the story, don’t use it!
So this was a really good chapter and the book overall is still pretty good. There’s still more to go and we’ll see if the good trend continues next time.
