When last BW saw of Damage he was becoming the Big Bang to restart the DC Universe after the events of Zero Hour: Crisis In Time. Now Damage is back in Atlanta, GA, trying to get some answers from Munro and Wyldheart. I don’t know what the deal is with Wyldheart (beyond “poor literacy is kewl” using a “y” instead of an “i”) but Damage is convinced Munro is his father, which the man swears is impossible because he’s sterile. Enraged at losing the brief moment of control Waverider gave him and previous events in the comic, Damage uses his powers to smack around Munro and in his rage trashes a small shopping mall, hurting others. Damage’s friend Mandra (who admits to her sister that she’s in love with Grant, Damage’s real name), arrives to talk Damage down. He chases off Wyldheart and surrenders to police, confused by everything that’s happened to him and needing time to think. Munro manages to sneak away and later collapses on his boat in front of his friend. Meanwhile, one party has plans to study Damage in the hopes of restoring their bodies with metahuman bodies while their ally is looking to get rid of metahumans and be all-powerful.
This is a tough one for me to review. The art is okay, but unlike most of the #0s we’ll be looking at we really don’t learn anything about Damage. There’s one part where the baddies wonder if he’s a true metahuman or part alien like Wyldchild and I do admit the drama makes me want to check out more (earlier) issues of the comic to see what it’s all about. However, a lot has gone on that I can’t really follow. Next week we’ll be reading what happened to Wally West, and it explores his history a bit more, which is what this comic should have done. In other words, this is a terrible issue to start in on. I am curious about it but this kind of shows the problem with a huge crossover event like Zero Hour since it forced Damage’s story to stop mid-event.
