Transformers: Beast Wars – The Ascending #3

IDW Publishing (October, 2007)

WRITER: Simon Furman

ARTIST: Don Figueroa

COLORIST: Josh Burcham (assisted by Mark Bristow)

LETTERER: Chris Mowry

EDITOR: Andrew Steven Harris

Big Convoy’s team arrives at Shokaract’s base of operations. He proceeds to kill Tasmania Kid but his “prize” is Big Convoy’s head! On Earth, Lioconvoy’s unit helps Razorbeast’s team hold the Angolomis-infected Razorbeast down. Ravage convinces Lio that the greater threat is still on Cybertron. They defeat one of the Blendtrons but more arrive. Razorbeast regains enough of himself to hold him back while the hastily-formed Maximal/Predacon alliance get to the ship, leaving Razorbeast and the wounded behind because the ship only holds so many. Thanks to Magmatron’s instructions they arrive just as Shokaract begins his attack, only for the ship to be destroyed and the remaining Blendtrons returning with the Angolomis Shokaract needs to ascend (and unknowingly become the vessel of Unicron)!

What they got right: The art is still good and as someone who has followed the series I rather enjoy the story.

What they got wrong: But that’s just it. I’ve seen or read about the Japanese Beast Wars shows so I know what Angolomis is and who the Blendtrons are, and I have the convention comics so I know what’s going on with Shokaract. I imagine anyone who has only followed the original Mainframe-produced shows however are completely lost by this point or just barely following along. Also, Tasmania Kid was my favorite of the Beast Wars II Maximals (just like Snarl is for this series…must be the toy mold that brings out good characters?) so seeing him snapped in half made me unhappy.

Recommendation: If you can’t follow this whole Blendtron and Angolomis and Shokaract stuff you may not enjoy this series. If you have you’ll get more out of it.
