“Oh no, not another Miracle Machine!”

Superman Adventures #16

DC Comics (February, 1998)

“Clark Kent, You’re A Nobody!”

WRITER: Mark Millar

PENCILER: Aluir Amancio

INKER: Terry Austin

COLORIST: Rick Talyor

LETTERER: Lois Buhalis

ASSISTANT EDITOR: Maureen McTigue

EDITOR: Mike McAvennie

If Clark Kent is down here, then how is Superman flying around up there? That’s what Clark wants to know, and he’s starting worry that he’s been delusional that he’s Superman. But when he’s finally able to access his message, he gets the recurring e-mail that he gets every 90 days…to warn him Mxyzptlk is here! Clark realize the little imp has messed with all the clues he’s Superman and assumed the role just to drive him nuts, and tricks him into going back home, thus restoring everything back to normal. At least for the next 90 days.

What they got right: Superman may get all the cool powers, but as we’ve seen before it’s Clark who makes Superman who he is, the upbringing by the Kents and the smarts that also makes him a good reporter. The story keeps you guessing as to what is really going on until the end and then we see Clark uses his non-superpower abilities to trick Mxyzptlk back home.

What they got wrong: Clark, you do realize that by telling him about the e-mails he’s going to try to mess with those the moment he returns to the third dimension and keep you from seeing the message, right? Maybe you shouldn’t have told him about that?

Recommendation: A good Superman/Mxyzptlk story from the DCAU tie-in continuity (which isn’t canon to the main DCAU for the record). Give this one a read.
