Nov. 30, 1927 – October 24, 2017

If your from my generation you knew him as the title character on Benson, a spinoff of the soap opera parody Soap when ABC saw his potential to head his own show, as well as co-starring in two made-for-TV movies with Gary Coleman. Later fans may know him as Robert Townsend’s father in The Meteor Man or the voice of Rafiki in the Lion King movies. Unfortunately, actor Robert Guillaume has passed away at 89-years-old. Despite a hard life and some personal missteps due to that life, he managed to break ground for black characters and leaves behind a good body of work. My condolences to his family and friends.

That Benson theme music still remains in my head today. Soon as I heard this morning that Robert Guillaume had passed away, that song automatically started playing in my mind. Benson was a show that my family watched when I was a kid. It truly was a show that the whole family could view. I didn’t know about Guillaume’s difficult childhood and troubling early adult years. His story demonstrates that one can make a positive change in one’s life no matter what had happened before. I’ve always viewed Robert Guillaume as a gentleman among actors. So I say prayers and condolences for him, his family, and friends.
