In delirium Merla lets slip that part of her plan to put Lotor on the throne of the Ninth Kingdom includes killing Zarkon, which enrages Haggar. Meanwhile, Lotor and Sven reach the hidden ship and take off, but before they can rescue the ladies they come across the Voltron Force. As they fight the queen of the Fifth Kingdom sends Yurak to confirm Merla’s death and ends up in a three-way battle with Voltron and Lotor & Sven. The cave is blown open during the fight, and Haggar opens the gate to the RoBeast pen. Guess who’s coming to dinner?
What they got right: A further connection is made between Zarkon and Haggar. Apparently one of Zarkon’s parents were part of her race, and maybe they’re even siblings? That’s a guess on my part, which would actually be interesting. The fact that Haggar wants to use Zarkon to increase the presence of her people among the Drule Supremacy is something I wish they could have further developed. Also, she’s darn creepy under that hood. Unlike other versions this is the first time we’ve seen her face and you may wish you hadn’t.
What they got wrong: Speaking of faces, why does Yurak finally show up (and not working for Zarkon) and get a bat-like face? I wonder what Cossack would have been changed to had there been more issues?
Recommendation: I’m going to miss this series. It’s a fun read, but we have one more issue and the Omnibus exclusive story next week and then we get to the last Voltron miniseries, which was wasted potential. Don’t get that, get this one instead. You won’t be sorry. Unless you are. We all have our own tastes after all.
Yes, the story in this comic series was so well done. It also opened up so many other creative possibilities if this series had continued or been continued in a new series. Devil’s Due did a really good job with Voltron.
