The director of Kong: Skull Island and the director of Keanu (which I keep thinking is about Keanu Reeves but apparently it’s a comedy about a cat or something) both took to Twitter to complain about HBO’s mishandling of the aspect ratio for their movies. This was after Kong director Jordan Vogt-Roberts learned they aired the movie in the same aspect ratio as the “airplane edit”, which also censors language and content like TV stations do for in-flight movies. Keanu director Peter Atencio had the same problem with HBO for his movie. You’d think a premium channel devoted to movie fans would show the movie properly since modern TV screens allow for this, but maybe (and I’m just guessing here) they’re also thinking of their SD channel for guys like me who still have older TVs? Well, as long as home video and streaming services gets it right.
