The Phantom #23

Moonstone (2008)

“Checkmate” part 3

WRITER: Mike Bullock

ARTIST: Slivestre Szilagyi

COLORIST: Bob Pedroza

COVER ART: Rick Leonardi & Terry Austin

LETTERER: Nate Pride

EDITOR: Joe Gentile

With Manic (the hallucinogenic drug from an earlier story) being introduced the riot problem is getting worse as the lies about President Luaga continue to spread. While Guran is sure he has a solution the Phantom hurries to meet with the president to warn him, but after stopping one attempt to poison the water with Manic and meeting a woman who remembers what Luaga and the Phantom did for her years ago, he is too late to stop Luaga from being shot. The Phantom learns the Singh are involved, just as Temur plans his next move.

Ed Rhoades “Behind The Mask” this issue is about terrorism as depicted in the Phantom comics.

What they got right: The Phantom is getting closer to the enemy, and even though things have gotten worse there are hints of a solution, that there is still something to be salvaged. Even at the low point there is still hope.

What they got wrong: So what was the surprise waiting for the Phantom last issue? Did I miss a page somewhere? The bad guys seem to think they have a way to keep the Phantom away from their main goal but unless they have another goal besides the fall of Bangalla it doesn’t seem to be working.

Recommendation: This is still a really good story arc. Worth checking out.
