I’m not a huge Pokémon fan but I do own Yellow and have been watching PlayFrame’s playthrough of Pokémon Sword. So when I stumbled upon tonight’s offering I wanted to check it out, and it’s really quite good. The official Pokémon YouTube channel posted a seven-part miniseries (mostly around 6 minutes in length each though the final chapter reaches 9 minutes) set in the current Nintendo Switch games Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. Set in the European-inspired Galar region, you choose a boy or girl character and follow your best friend Hop as you do the usual Pokeworld stuff of traveling the world and capturing little monsters in balls to fight each other for fun (both yours and the monster’s…it’s less the dog fight gag the internet uses and more like just sparring until someone gets knocked out) before you hit puberty. Meanwhile in the real world parents are scared if you leave the yard.
The miniseries doesn’t involve Ash Ketchum, the usual hero of Pokémon anime, but actually focuses on some of the gym leaders, with the main interest centered around a sick boy in recovery in the hospital and his hopes of someday becoming a Pokémon trainer, while the gym leaders are more interested in their big losses at the hands of Champion Leon. There are some real tearjerker and heartwarming moments in the miniseries, though if this is based on Britian why does nobody have a British accent? It is in English though, so enjoy. Just let the videos play because this is the full playlist and not just the one video.
