There are times when you know the formula copying is running out of ideas when the weird ones occur. I guess the crossover platform fighting game genre is reaching that level if it didn’t already pass it because it’s not a genre I follow all that intently. MultiVersus is a crossover fighter that hopes to play with the Smash Bros. formula by having their various owned (and in one case licensed because I don’t think simply airing a show with the character counts) WB characters beat each other up. The game is made by Player First Games and distributed through Warner Brothers Games.
Recently a preview trailer was produced to show off this new game. Because I like to end the week on something fun and my other two potential topics…aren’t, let’s see this game in action.
Anyone else catch the fake gamertags in the trailer? Nice little bit of in-joking.
One thing that strikes me is the art style. Many of the involved franchises have a signature style while others have had numerous styles and can be tweaked to anything. This has one set style, but one in which Batman and Arya Stark don’t look out of place next to Bugs Bunny or Steven Universe, and Bugs and Steve look okay standing next to each other…and yet each character is recognizable. That’s a good style.
The early roster for the game on their website contains the above characters, though I’m guessing this isn’t the full list. It’s just the only ones they had ready for post time. I can break them down into small groups, and you’ll see why in a moment.
Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are obvious. Still considered DC’s “Big Three” not having them would be a bad move. Harley Quinn has been in movies and her own streaming show so I guess I understand why she’s there. It’s not like they’re going to break out Sideways or B’Wanna Beast. They’re going to go with the popular characters. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Green Arrow, the Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman, and maybe Stargirl and Black Lightning show up as a larger part of DC representation.
Sadly all we get here is Shaggy paying tribute to the “Ultra Instinct” meme as he does the Goku power-up bit, and Tom & Jerry in their rare working as a team moments. Personally, I’d like to see them break out a few more heroes, from the campier outings like The Impossibles, the more serious heroes like Space Ghost and Birdman, to the parody heroes like Dynomutt and Hong Kong Phooey. Maybe even include the straight-up comedy characters like Yogi or Secret Squirrel if you’re going to have Shaggy of all characters involved–which means Scooby-Doo and Captain Caveman better make the list! Whether or not they’d be subsections on this list is debatable. The Impossibles would end up standing alone. And yes, Tom & Jerry are in this group because Joseph Hanna and William Barbera created and produced the shorts for MGM but bought the characters and their supporting cast along with some of their other characters like Droopy when MGM closed their animated shorts division.
Thus far only Adventure Time and Steven Universe sent their representatives. I don’t know a lot about both shows other than the basic premise and a few backstory details but I think Garnet was the right choice to team with Steven. I wonder if the Cartoon Cartoons will show up here, or shows like OK KO: Let’s Be Heroes would show up. And where would you put Teen Titans Go if that comes up? Hopefully we won’t have to answer that question and they’ll be the DC version of the Titans cast. That’s not a slam on the show despite my issues with it. It’s about connecting them to their origin.
This would not be a permanent grouping as the list gets larger. Arya Stark from Game Of Thrones is a licensed character since her source material is the books even though her design is based on the TV show. Meanwhile Reindog is actually an original character for the game according to one site I looked him up on, and I’m not sure about having original characters in the game. It kind of defeats the purpose of being a crossover game if you introduce new characters. Check out the description though.
The world of Zanifeer was one of the first to fall victim to the Nothing during the great dimensional cataclysm. As far as most people knew, there were no survivors… except one. Reindog is a Royal Guardian – A long-lived protector of the Zanifeer royal family assigned to keep them safe. Although he looks fluffy and sweet, the heart of a warrior beats in his chest and he will do whatever it takes to protect those he loves. With the amazing powers from his gem he hopes that he can even find a way to bring back his beloved family.
I wonder if this is the same Nothing from The NeverEnding Story and how that plays into the lore of the game? Warner Brothers did make that movie.
The reason I put these groupings together is I would like to see some kind of benefit from using characters who operate together. For example Finn and Jake from Adventure Time are best friends and adventure together, so maybe they have a special team attack unique to their group. Obviously as the list gets longer that may get harder. I doubt Bugs Bunny is going to be the only Looney Tune by the time the full roster happens. As far as who I’d really like to team up? Frankenstein Jr. and the Iron Giant. I’d win ALL the fights! Except maybe against Superman because Iron Giant would want his autograph. Actually, imagine that team boost given Iron Giant’s fascination with Superman.
I’m not really much of a fighting game enthusiast in general and I’ve never actually played a platform fighter, crossover or otherwise, before so I don’t know if I’d actually get this. However, they are taking playtest applications now and the game will be free to play (with obvious benefits if you spend money on stuff because this has to be profitable somehow) over at the game’s official website if you want to take part. It’s a neat idea. If you ever wanted Arya Stark to beat the stuffings out of Steven Universe, here’s your chance!
