Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.
In the last chapter of Robotech: it’s a race for the Homeward Bound. General Vincinz and his fellow Leonard acolytes want to escape Earth before the Invid arrive while Dana wants to sneak the Tirolian refugees on board to take them home. Nova suspects something is up because it’s Dana. With three chapters left something is going to happen.
And now we’re at the point in our chapter a week review series where I’ve run out of things to say going in, so let’s just see who wins this race.
We being with Dana and her party arriving at the factory satellite. Not being as well versed the expanded universe as I could be I didn’t know Wolff took part in the Malcontent Uprising, when some of the more restless Zentraedi (not knowing the story I don’t know who is right, if anyone) rose up against the then-current government. Apparently Wolff was on the military side and was already earned a name for himself as the T’sentraedi are aware of his history. Dana offers to take them along, as things have improved for the Zentraedi back on Tirol and Fantoma but they’ve never known either as home and opt to stay.
Meanwhile, Nova tries to convince Aldershot that Dana is going to take the ship to Tirol but right now he’s more concerned with Vincinz and friends trying to steal it themselves. Nova is convinced they’re just trying to stop Dana because the fold system is functional but Aldershot believes they want to steal it. Nova seems so obsessed with exposing Dana that she refuses to believe Aldershot is right and the military is forced to stop Vincinz when he shoots at them. Apparently Nova is staying but so is Lt. Brown so at least they were together at the end, unless they somehow survived. Too bad, as you’d think they were beloved enough to go with but then again I don’t see Nova so willing to run off so it’s for the best. The best we can hope for is Nova and Brown ended up on Mars base to help put together the various attacks on the Invid we know about in the show. Later she and Fredricks try to talk her out of it, but this is Dana we’re talking about.
And so Dana, Angelo, Sean, Marie, Bowie, and Musica are the only ones to leave. I know James Luceno wasn’t aware of what would happen in Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles with Louie also on-board (although we have two chapters left to expose that Louie is pretending to be the robot) since that was years later, but it still feels strange that he isn’t here.
The ship is gone and we have two chapters and an epilogue left to go. This wasn’t a bad chapter. Everyone felt like themselves, the situations felt right, and for once Dana’s hairbrained plan is a good one. How will things end? Be sure to be with us for chapter 17, the next chapter in the odyssey of Robotech. And don’t worry, this is the last Robotech related article until next week.
