If you thought dropping certain questionable DC movie and television properties (but not all) was a hint that DC will be in a better spot, you forgot Hollywood doesn’t care about comic books and David Zaslav is part of the Hollywood culture. They just see DC Comics the same way Disney sees Marvel Comics, as an intellectual property generator to create movies and TV shows around, and then sell merchandise. The latest example is that if you try to go to dccomics.com it takes you dc.com, which shoves the comics into one section while dropping “comics” from the site URL and name. Bounding Into Comics has a good article about this change and it only creates less faith that the comic company has a future. People were already worried WarnerMedia was going to sell off or shut down the comics division, and now that carries over to Warner Brothers Discovery, with nothing being done to acknowledge the comics, never mind soothing comic readers’ fears.
Is DC Comics future in jeopardy? Time will tell, but as my favorite comic universe until DiDio and the current generation even I’m losing hope. And the DC Universe used to be a place of hope. Maybe it really is just an “S”.
