“From The Stars”

PLOT: Tommy Yune

SCRIPT: Jay Faerber

ARTISTS: Long Vo, Charles Park, & Saka

LETTERER: Jenna Garcia

ASSISTANT EDITOR: Kristy Quinn

EDITOR: Ben Abernanthy

It’s the third World War…I think. Believing the Russian sold a submarine to a foreign power, Admiral Hayes sends Skull Squadron to follow it. However, the sub’s Russian captain, Henry Gloval, decides to…mess with them I guess? Not that it matters because a third party attacks both the sub and Roy Fokker’s squadron just as Hayes is called back to the Pentagon. Earth is being visited, and it’s dropping right into the battlefield!

What they got right: The artists come from Udon Studios and I love their artwork. That includes this comic as they translate Gloval, Fokker, and Lisa’s dad into their art style. The coloring is amazing. I like how Garcia uses a different font for the translated Russian rather than the old fashioned <this is a translated bit of dialog> format. It sells that this isn’t in English.

What they got wrong: Whatever font she chose, however, seems a bit lighter and is a bit harder to read. I don’t know if she used the wrong color, or the wrong font. I like the idea though. Also, we already have a perfectly good origin for the SDF-1 coming to Earth thanks to Comico. I don’t think we need to retell that story. Macek himself even plotted that one.

What I think overall: It may seem unnecessary to me but it’s off to a good start as a story. Curious to see where this goes seeing as I haven’t read it since it first came out.
